Founder, Yvon Chouinard, learned to climb at the age of 14 and it soon became a passion. After seeing a need for innovative climbing equipment, he created reusable climbing hardware by hand and sold it from the trunk of his car. His business grew, and in 1970, Chouinard Equipment became the biggest supplier of climbing hardware in the United States. Soon after, the company expanded to sell clothing and Patagonia, Inc. was created in order to develop and grow a new facet of the company. Patagonia considers environmental impact in all aspects of their corporation and supports environmental organizations around the world.
